Imagine being able to take detailed, marked-up notes as you watch and learn each segment. No more sticky tabs on your monitor. No more hunting for a pen and paper to take notes. It's private, so feel free to be as silly as you want. (see example image below)

My Notebook Example

  1. Use a familiar tool bar (Word, Gmail, etc.) to make your notes personal and easy to read. There is even a print button for easy printing.
  2. Create links to sites that helped you address your specific problems.
  3. Make lists of the steps you took so that you never have to rely on your own memory ;-)
  4. See exactly when your notes were saved last so that you don't accidentally loose valuable information.
  • Overview
The essence of editing is choosing your shots and then trimming them and combining them together to tell a story. In this video Joshua shows you how to add your video clips to the time line and do the basic functions of editing. You will see how easy it is to trim the edges back to leave only the best part of a clip. You will see how to use the split command to break a clip up into smaller segments, making it easier to trim out the undesired video and leave only the good stuff. Next to a cut, dissolves and fades are the most common type of transition used in video editing. Next time you are watching your favorite TV show pay attention to the transitions, 99% of them will be cuts.
  • How Many Video Tracks?
By default Sony Vegas Movie Studio gives you 3 video tracks to work with. One for the video, one for any overlays and one for your text. You actually have 4 layers, the forth layer can be added by clicking on Insert in the top menu and then choosing Video Track from the drop down menu.
  • Overlapping Clips
Be careful you don't set one clip directly on top of another clip. When you do this the default action will be to dissolve between the two clips. What you end up with a dissolve the length of your clip where you can see half of one scene slowly emerging through the other. If this happens just move one of the clips until it is no longer over the top of the other.
  • Zooming In And Out
Zooming in on the timeline is a great way to get a closer look at your transitions or to fine tune your trimming. To zoom in just scroll up on you mouse wheel. To zoom out scroll down. If you don't have a mouse wheel you can zoom in and out using the + and - buttons on the bottom right next to the scroll bar.
  • S For Split
The keyboard short cut for splitting a clip is easy to remember, "s" for split. If no clips are selected in the time line the split command will split all the clips on all the layers. If you only want to split one clip but not the clips above or below, then click on the clip to select it and the push "s". This will split only the clip you have selected and leave all the other clips alone.
  • Fade In Fade Out
Fades are the most common way to begin and end a video. In Sony Vegas Movie Studio creating fades couldn't be easier, just click the top corner and drag.
